Repurposing Furniture and Lives

A few weeks ago we stopped in at Matthew’s Hope Chest in Winter Garden, FL to browse through their inventory of furniture.  The shop, run by Homeless men working through the Matthew’s Hope program, repurpose old furniture, and sell it to the public in the form of a donation.  Donations received go to the program and their efforts in helping the homeless get back on their feet.

Browsing around we found this interesting looking chest

Overcoming Homelessness

I had an idea for it, so I spoke with Greg, who works there.  Greg is currently in the Matthew’s Hope Moving Forward Program and is living in one of their transitional houses.  A very talented artist, he works on furniture earning points that are used to pay for housing and some old fines.

Our idea for this chest was to give it some legs and a better finish.  Our living room is currently being redesigned into a “beach-themed” room and the chest felt like a good addition.  Unfortunately, there was some damage to the chest but Greg reassured me he could make it right.

That he did.
